Make a cute hatching chick craft with this free printable. Perfect for Easter, spring, or farm themes. Easy step-by-step instructions included.
This hatching chick craft can be made as an Easter craft with the decorated egg. It can also be made for a spring craft or farm animal craft by using the white egg.
What I love about this craft is that you can make it in two different ways. If you have a brad (fastener), kids can move the top half of the egg to reveal the chick inside. My kids had so much fun opening and closing the egg to make their chick “hatch.” They kept pretending the chick was peeking out to say hello.
If you don’t have a fastener, you can still make this craft just as cute. Instead of making a moving egg, you can glue the pieces to construction paper. The top and bottom halves of the egg can be glued on separately. The top of the egg can be glued above the chick’s head or it can be glued next to the chick.
Both methods turn out adorable, so just use the supplies you have on hand.
I’ve included two egg designs to match different themes. The decorated egg is perfect for an Easter craft. If you’re looking for a spring or farm craft, use the plain egg instead. Kids can also decorate the plain egg to make it an Easter craft.

No matter which method you choose, this craft is easy and fun for kids.

How to Make the Hatching Chick Craft
For a video tutorial on how to make this spring craft, please watch the YouTube video below.
Step 1: Color
Color the parts of the chick craft with crayons, markers, or colored pencils. We used crayons.
Step 2: Cut

Cut out the craft pieces.
Cut along the jagged line on the egg to create a top and bottom half.
Step 3: Add the Fastener
Overlap the top and bottom halves of the egg slightly. Poke a small hole on one side of the egg and insert a brad (fastener) to connect the two pieces. This allows the top of the egg to move so the chick can “hatch.”

Step 4: Glue
Glue the chick behind the bottom half of the egg. When you move the top half, your chick will peek out from inside the egg.
Ways to Modify This Craft

If you don’t have a fastener, no worries. Here’s another way to make the craft:
- Color and cut out the chick craft pieces. Cut along the jagged line on the egg to create a top and bottom half.
- Glue the chick onto a piece of construction paper.
- Glue the bottom half of the egg over the chick’s body.
- Glue the top half of the egg above the chick’s head or next to the chick.
