What the Stars, Stripes, and Colors Mean
As we worked on this craft, I took a little time to talk with my kids about what the American flag means. They had fun coloring and gluing, but I also wanted them to understand why the flag is important. If you’re crafting with your kids too, this is a great chance to share a little history in a way that’s easy to understand.
The flag has 50 stars, and each star stands for one of the 50 states in the United States. The stars sit on a blue rectangle in the top left corner of the flag.
There are also 13 stripes on the flag—7 red and 6 white. These stripes stand for the original 13 colonies that became the first states in America. It’s a nice way to remember where our country began and how it has grown over time.
The colors of the flag also have meaning. Red stands for courage and bravery. White stands for purity and honesty. Blue stands for justice and loyalty. We talked about how those are all important values in our country.
So while this craft is fun and creative, it’s also a meaningful way to celebrate our country. It’s more than just red, white, and blue—it’s a symbol of where we’ve been and where we’re going.
