Paper Woven Easter Basket Instructions
Cut the construction paper into 1-inch strips on the 8-inch side of the paper. We used blue and yellow construction paper.
You will need 7 strips of each color. 6 strips of each color for the basket and 1 strip of each color for the handle.
Lay 6 strips of one color on your table. I used blue. Leave a little space between each strip.
Weave 1 strip of the other colored paper (I used yellow) through the 6 strips. Weaving under, over, under, over…. Repeat.
It is normal for the strips of paper to move. To prevent your paper strips from moving, you can use painter’s tape to tape them to the table.
When all 6 of your strips of paper are woven together, slide the strips together to tighten the weave. This will be the base of the basket.
Gather together the strips on one side of the square and staple them. For example, I gathered the blue strips from one side of the square and stapled them together.
As you gather the strips together, the strips will fan out. Don’t worry. It happened to me too. When you staple the other side, just make sure to re-weave any strips of paper that fanned out.
Gather together the strips on the other side of the square and staple them together.
You may notice that this causes the woven section to curl up. This is what we want to happen, it will create the basket shape.
Repeat for the other two sides. Gather the strips on a side of the square and staple together. This is the base of your basket.
Take 1 strip of the construction paper and staple it across the basket to form a handle. Take another strip of construction paper and staple it across the basket to the other two sides of the basket. See picture below.
I hope you enjoy making this paper woven Easter basket with your kids.
