I love butterflies. It always makes me smile when I see a colorful butterfly in the yard.

These cute butterflies also made me smile. You can make them as colorful as you’d like.

My son choose primary colors and my daughter choose pinks and purples.

My son just put drops of paint on the paper. My daughter thought about where she should paint each circle.

This butterfly craft teaches your child about mirror images. The paper is folded on top of the wet paint and a mirror image of what your child painted is on the other half of the paper.

I explained to my kids that butterfly’s wings are mirror images. They wanted to see pictures of butterflies to see the mirror images.

After the craft, we spent some time looking at butterfly pictures. I love it when a craft becomes a learning opportunity.

Butterfly Craft Instructions:

Put dots of paint on one side of your white paper.

Red, blue, and yellow dots of paint on a white paper.

Next, fold your painted paper in half and press firmly. Rub your hand over your folded paper to make sure all of the paint transfers to the other half.

The paper that had the dots of paint on it is folded in half.

Then, unfold your paper and let paint dry completely.

After the paint has dried completely, fold your painted paper in half. Cut the paper to look like two wings. This will be the wings of your butterfly. Unfold the cut paper.

The white paper with red, blue, and yellow paint on it has been cut to look like a butterfly.

Next, cut out the butterfly’s head and body from black paper.

Then, glue the body and head to the center of the butterfly’s wings.

Cut 2 thin strips from the black paper for the butterfly’s antennae. Curl the thin strips of paper (wrap the thin strips of paper around a pencil). Glue the strips to the butterfly’s head.

Ways To Adapt This Craft

Instead of using white paper, you can use light colored construction paper to make your butterfly.

Try putting drops of primary colors close together so that when you fold it, the colors blend together to make different colors.

This will be a great way to teach color mixing.

For example, you can put a drop of red paint close to a drop of yellow paint. When you fold the paper in half and press together, you should see the 2 colors mix to make orange.
