Pool Noodle Boat Supplies:
Step 1: Cut the pool noodle.
With the help of an adult, carefully cut the pool noodle into smaller sections. Pool noodles cut easily with a serrated knife.
We cut our pool noodles into 1-inch circles and 4-inch sections. The 4-inch sections we cut in half lengthwise. Remember, safety comes first, so let an adult handle the cutting part.
Step 2: Design your boat.
Next, it’s time to make your boat unique and special. We used toothpicks to attach the pool noodles together.
We attached 1 pool noodle circle on each side of the longer section with toothpicks.
Step 3: Make your sail.
Use craft foam to create sails for your boats. Cut the craft foam into triangle shapes or any other shape you like.
I made a triangle shape sail, and my son made a unique shaped sail.
You can use the scissors to cut small slits in the foam sail for the straw. Place the straw through the small slits in the sail.
Step 4: Assemble the boat.
It’s boat-building time! Take each pool noodle section and insert the straw with the sail into it. You may need to use scissors to make a hole in the pool noodle for the straw.
Step 5: Ready to set sail.
Now that your boat is assembled, it’s time to test its seaworthiness. Fill a container with water, such as a bathtub or a kiddie pool. Gently place your pool noodle boat into the water and watch it float. Give it a gentle push and see how it glides across the water’s surface.
Grab some friends or family members and have a boat race. Line up your pool noodle boats and see whose boat reaches the finish line first. You can use straws to blow wind into the sails and make your boats go faster.
