Name art activities can be an effective way to teach kids how to spell their name.
I struggled teaching my son how to spell his name. He knew his name, but he had no desire to spell it.
How I taught my son to spell his name without complaints.
I wrote his name in pencil and had him trace over it in marker. He complained that was too boring.
I tried to get him to write his name in chalk on the sidewalk. He drew pictures instead.
I had him glue pieces of construction paper over his name and he loved it.
Also, this paper mosaic craft is a great way to help your kids learn sight words. Happy learning!

Mosaic Name Craft Supplies
- white paper
- marker
- scraps of construction paper
- glue stick
- scissors
Mosaic Name Instructions:
Write your child’s name on the white paper. Make sure you leave enough space between each letter. The first time I did this, I made the letters too close together and it was difficult for my son to glue the pieces of construction paper to the letters.
Next, cut construction paper into small squares. This is good scissor practice for the kids. If your child isn’t old enough for scissors, he can tear the construction paper into small pieces (this will improve his fine motor skills).
Then, have your child glue the small squares of construction paper onto the letters of his name. Let his creativity flow. My son sort of followed a color pattern. While your child is gluing the different colors, you can ask your child to name the colors (I love involving learning into a craft).
Enjoy your child’s artwork. Ask him the letters that are in his name. You can also hang this up where your child can see it to help him learn how to spell his name.
Ways To Adapt This Craft
You can use this technique to help your child spell sight words or his phone number.
You can use pieces of tissue paper instead of construction paper. I like to use my scrap colored paper for this craft.
