Baking cookies with my kids is one of our favorite things to do together. We love spending time in the kitchen, mixing ingredients and creating delicious treats. Our absolute favorite flavor combination is peanut butter and chocolate, just like in Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, which we can never get enough of.

One day, while browsing through recipes, I came upon this peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies recipe on the back of a Nestle Tollhouse package. As soon as I saw it, I knew we had to give it a try.

My kids loved adding the ingredients. But their favorite part is adding the chocolate chunks.

  • All purpose flour
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Peanut butter – You can use creamy or chunky. We used creamy.
  • Butter – I like to use unsalted butter to ensure that the cookies aren’t too salty.
  • Brown sugar – You can use either light brown sugar or dark brown sugar. Light brown sugar has a lower molasses content and a milder flavor, while dark brown sugar contains more molasses, giving it a richer, deeper flavor and darker color.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Eggs
  • Nestle Tollhouse Semi-sweet chocolate chunks

Recipe Tips

  1. Cream the peanut butter and sugars: Beat the peanut butter and sugars until smooth and creamy. This helps to evenly distribute the flavors and creates a soft texture.
  2. Use room temperature ingredients: Make sure your butter, eggs, and peanut butter are at room temperature. This helps the ingredients blend together smoothly.
  3. Don’t overmix: Mix the ingredients until just combined. Overmixing can lead to tough cookies.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips: Gently fold in the chocolate chips after the dough comes together. This ensures they’re evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  5. Press down on the cookies: Use a fork or the back of a spoon to lightly press down on each cookie before baking. This helps them bake evenly as these cookies tend not to spread too much.
  6. Watch the baking time: Bake the cookies until they’re lightly golden brown around the edges. They may seem slightly underbaked in the center, but they’ll continue to cook as they cool on the baking sheet.
  7. Cool completely: Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. This helps them set and prevents them from crumbling.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to make irresistibly delicious peanut butter chocolate chip cookies every time!

Why Do You Press Down Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookies?

Pressing down on peanut butter chocolate chip cookies before baking serves a few important purposes. First, it helps the cookies to bake more evenly. When you press down on the dough, it flattens slightly, creating a uniform shape that cooks consistently. This means you won’t end up with some cookies that are undercooked in the middle.

Pressing down on the dough also helps the cookies to spread properly while baking. By flattening them a bit before they go in the oven, you encourage them to spread out into a nice, round shape as they bake. This gives you cookies that are the perfect size and thickness.

How To Store Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookies

After baking your peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies, it’s important to store them properly to maintain their freshness. Once the cookies have cooled completely, transfer them to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag. Layer the cookies with parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together.

If you’re storing them for a short period, like a few days, you can keep them at room temperature. However, if you want to store them for longer, consider freezing them.

For freezing, place the cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet until frozen solid, then transfer them to a freezer-safe container. Thaw frozen cookies at room temperature or in the refrigerator before enjoying.
