My kids love playing with kinetic sand. It can be pricey to buy, so we decided to make our own. Learn how to make kinetic sand using 4 ingredients.
My kids first discovered this moldable sand while we were waiting to get pictures with Santa. The store had kinetic sand for kids to play with.
We love that it is moldable and shapeable. It feels squishy and holds it shape.
Last week, my kids saw a commercial for it and they both wanted me to buy some.
After research, I discovered we could make our own DIY kinetic sand.
My kids were super excited to make and play with their squishy sand.
It is easy to make and you only need 4 ingredients.
Here is a tip I learned: add the soapy water slowly. I only added 1/2 cup and it was too much. However, the sand I used was coarse and already wet.
Depending on your sand, you may need more or less water. If your sand is too wet, just add more dry sand.

DIY Kinetic Sand Supplies
- 3 cups sand
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 Tablespoon dish soap
- 1 cup water
Instructions
Mix sand and corn starch in a large container or bucket. Mix well.
In a separate mixing cup, mix 1 cup water with 1 Tablespoon dish soap. Stir well. My dish soap was green, so it colored the water green.
Slowly, add the water / soap mixture to the sand / cornstarch mixture. Mix well. I only needed 1/2 cup water with my sand / cornstarch mixture.
I hope you enjoy making this kinetic sand with your kids.
How To Play With Kinetic Sand
Your kids can use sand castle molds and shovels. Kinetic sand tends to hold it’s shape better than regular sand.
You can also make kinetic sand sensory bins. You can add shells for a beach theme.
My son loved playing with dinosaurs and sand castle molds. My daughter loved making race tracks and mountains with her sensory bin.
