- Pencil
- Thin black marker
- Ruler
- Colored pencils
How to Make the American Flag Craft
Step 1: Draw a Dot
Start by drawing a dot with a pencil towards the upper left corner of your paper. Make sure it’s a little off-center.
Step 2: Draw Lines from the Dot
Using a ruler, draw straight lines from the dot to the edges of the paper. These lines should go all the way around the paper. Your paper will look like it’s divided into many triangles.
My daughter used a pencil to draw the lines and then went over the pencil with a black marker. Or you could draw the lines with a black marker.
Step 3: Add Wavy Circle Patterns
Next, around the dot, draw wavy circles. These circles should look like they ripple out from the center dot. In some sections, it will leave the edge of the paper.
Again, my daughter used pencil to draw the wavy circles and then went over the pencil with a black marker. Or you could draw the lines with a black marker.
Step 4: Draw Stars
In the upper left corner section, draw stars in every other box. You can make them as big or small as you like.
Step 5: Color the Upper Left Corner
Grab two different shades of blue colored pencils. Use one shade to color in the squares with stars (leave the stars white). Use the other shade to color the squares without stars.
Step 6: Color the Rest of the Squares
For the rest of the flag, color every other square red. Leave the remaining squares white. This will create a nice checkerboard pattern.
It may help to use a pencil to lightly mark which squares should be colored red.
I hope you enjoy making this American flag craft with your kids.
