Coffee filter pumpkin suncatcher - Halloween kids craft

Halloween is approaching fast and I am still trying to decorate the house. These coffee filter pumpkins look great hanging on the patio doors.

Last month was coffee filter art month at our library and we learned about different crafts to make with coffee filters. When I was doing the craft with my kids, I thought it would make great pumpkins.

When making this craft, you will need to use washable markers. The color with washable markers will “bleed” and give your pumpkin a blended look.

You can use any size coffee filters that you have. We had several industrial coffee filters, but I thought that would make too large of a pumpkin. We used regular coffee filters.

My kids favorite part was misting the coffee filter with water. It is fun to watch the colors blend together when the coffee filter is wet.

Make sure your colored coffee filter is on a tray because the colors will bleed when it is misted with water. You don’t want to accidentally get color on your table.

You can hang your completed project on a wall or window. I like the way the colored coffee filter looks in a sunny window.

Coffee Filter Pumpkin Instructions

Step 1: Color the coffee filter.

Use washable markers to color the coffee filter. You do not need to color the coffee filter completely. The water will blend the colors together.

We used orange, yellow, and brown washable markers.

Step 2: Mist the colored coffee filter.

Fill a spray bottle with water. Put your colored coffee filter on a tray.

Then, mist the coffee filter with water. The color will bleed, so make sure the filter is on a plastic tray or plate.

Step 3: Let your coffee filter dry.

Let your coffee filter dry completely. We let our filters dry in the sunshine and it dried very quickly.

Step 4: Make the pumpkin’s face.

Then, cut out eyes, nose, and a mouth for your pumpkin from black or yellow construction paper.
