This weave turkey craft is fun for kids to make this Thanksgiving. Kids can weave paper strips to make colorful feathers for the turkey.
My kids were super excited to make this craft, especially my son. My son loves to make potholders (he uses this loom) and the weaving of the paper strips over and under reminded him of making potholders.
It is hard for my son to sit still at times and I read that making things with your hands (such as knitting, crocheting) can help them sit still. My son is 7 and he sits still while he makes the potholders.
To make the body of the turkey, paint a paper plate brown. If you want a quicker, less messy craft, you can skip this step.
Then, fold the paper plate in half to make it easier to cut the strips into the paper plate. You don’t want to cut all the way to the edge of the plate.
The fun part is weaving paper strips over and under the cut paper plate. This also helps with hand eye coordination with your kids.
Then, make a head and legs for your turkey and your Thanksgiving kids craft is done. Keep reading for the full instructions.

Weave Turkey Craft Instructions
Paint one side of a paper plate brown. Let paint dry completely.
Next, fold the paper plate in half to cut slits about 1 inch apart. Do not cut all the way to the edges of the paper plate.
Then, unfold the paper plate. These slits will be where the colored paper is woven.
Next, cut colored paper into long strips. We used red, orange, and yellow. We used 5 strips of colored paper.
Then, weave the colored paper over and under each slit in the paper plate. These will be the colorful turkey feathers.
Cut a turkey head shape from brown paper. If you are not good at drawing, you can trace your child’s shoe (it makes a good turkey shape). Cut out the turkey shape.
Next, cut out an orange diamond and red teardrop shape for the turkey wattle. Fold the orange diamond in half. This will be the turkey’s beak.
Also, cut out 2 turkey legs with feet from orange paper.
Glue the 2 googly eyes, the beak and red wattle to the turkey’s head.
Glue the turkey’s head to the woven paper plate. Glue the turkey’s legs to the paper plate.
Enjoy your colorful paper woven turkey.
