Making a weave turtle is a fun and engaging activity for kids of all ages. It encourages creativity and imagination as they choose colors and patterns for their turtle.
The process of weaving helps develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It is a simple weave pattern of weaving over and around popsicle sticks. This weave pattern is similar to the God’s eye pattern.
Few supplies are needed to make this cute turtle. Just 3 popsicle sticks and yarn. You can use scrap yarn as this art project doesn’t require a lot of yarn.
This turtle craft also provides a sense of accomplishment as children complete each step and see their turtle come to life.

How To Make A Popsicle Stick Weaving Turtle Craft
For a video tutorial on how to make a weave turtle, please watch the YouTube video below.
Step 1: Paint the 3 popsicle sticks.
Paint 1 side of the 3 popsicle sticks. We used green paint. Let paint dry completely. This step can be optional.
You can also use already painted craft sticks to make it even easier.
Step 2: Glue the 3 popsicle sticks together.
Once the paint is dry, glue 2 popsicle sticks in the shape of an X. Then glue the X shape onto one popsicle stick. See picture below.
Step 3: Begin wrapping yarn around the center of the popsicle sticks.
Tie yarn around one of the popsicle sticks where all of the popsicle sticks come together. Wrap yarn around the center of the popsicle sticks. Make sure to cover the middle section of the turtle (where all the popsicle sticks come together).
Step 4: Start weaving.
Start by wrapping the yarn around 1 popsicle stick and then place the yarn over the next popsicle stick and wrap the yarn around the stick. Keep repeating the over and around weaving pattern.
Step 5: Switch colors and continue weaving.
To switch colors, simply tie the new color of yarn onto the old color. Keep repeating the over and around weaving pattern.
We used 3 different colors of yarn to make our turtle craft. If you want, you can use 2 or even 1 color of yarn.
When you are finished weaving, simply tuck the end piece of your yarn under in the back. Or you could tie a knot. Or add a small amount of glue to secure the yarn.
Step 6: Draw the face and toes of the turtle.
On one of your popsicle sticks, draw eyes and a mouth. We used a black marker.
On the 4 popsicle sticks that make up the X, draw 2-3 lines for the turtle’s toes.
Step 7: Enjoy your popsicle stick weaving turtle craft.
In just a few easy steps, you’ve created a beautiful and unique weave turtle craft. Display your turtle in your home or give it as a gift to someone special.
