These yarn butterflies are so easy to make. This is a great summer craft for kids.
This butterfly craft uses a simple weave pattern to make the butterfly wings. It is a great beginner weaving craft for kids to make.
You may already have most of the supplies on hand. You will need craft sticks (popsicle sticks), yarn, pony beads, and a chenille stem to make these beautiful butterflies.
The weaving pattern is a simple over then under pattern. It is also referred to as a figure 8 pattern.
It does get tricky tying off the ends of the yarn, depending on the age of your child, you may need to help with this.
You can also tuck the end under in the back of the butterfly and and a small dab of hot glue to hold the yarn in place. My kids found it easier to put a small piece of tape on the back of the butterfly instead of tying the ends of the yarn.
We used a wooden bead for the head of the butterfly and pony beads for the body of the butterfly. Feel free to use any type of beads you have at home.
We used supplies we had at home to make these butterflies. I provided a list of similar items found at Amazon in case you need to purchase supplies.

How To Make Yarn Butterflies
For a video tutorial on how to make yarn butterflies, please watch the YouTube video below.
Make an X using two craft sticks. I found it easier to keep the craft sticks in place by gluing them in the X shape and letting the glue dry completely.
Wrap 1 color of yarn around your X shaped craft sticks. Once you get to the open area, start weaving in an over, under pattern. Go over one popsicle stick and then under the other and repeat this pattern. It is also making a figure 8 shape. It is okay if your child doesn’t understand the weaving pattern, he can simply wrap his yarn around the craft sticks.
Once you have as much of that yarn color as you want, tie off the end. Then repeat the same color on the other side of the wings.
Now, it is time for your second color of yarn. Repeat the same weaving pattern (over and then under) until you get to the end of the popsicle sticks and tie the yarn.
Then repeat with the second color of yarn on the other side of the wings.
We only used two different colors of yarn for our butterflies, however, you could use 3 different colors if you want.
Next, fold the chenille stem in half. Make several twists of the folded chenille stem bottom.
Place your weaved butterfly wings in the folded chenille stem. Twist a couple of times at the top of the chenille stem to secure your weaved butterfly wings.
Thread a large bead through both ends of the folded chenille stems. This will be the butterfly’s head.
Add pony beads to the bottom of the chenille stem for the butterfly’s body.
Bend each top of the chenille stem to make two antennae for your butterfly.
I hope you enjoy making these yarn butterflies with your kids.
