Easy DIY Bookmarks Made with Contact Paper

Make your own contact paper DIY bookmarks with this easy kids’ craft. A fun, mess-free activity using tissue paper, paper scraps, and clear contact paper.

Looking for a quick and fun craft that kids will love? Try making these easy contact paper DIY bookmarks. They’re colorful, mess-free, and great for kids of all ages.

We made these at home last weekend, and my kids were so proud of their creations. They picked out their favorite colors of tissue paper scraps.

You can also turn this craft into a themed project. Try making seasonal bookmarks with fall leaves, heart stickers for Valentine’s Day, or snowflakes for winter. Just change up the colors and decorations to match the season.

If you’re doing this craft with younger kids, pre-cut the contact paper for them. That way they can focus on decorating. Older kids may enjoy cutting fun shapes like stars or hearts for their bookmarks.

This is also a great group activity. It works well in classrooms, libraries, or birthday parties. Set up a table with all the supplies and let the kids create their own one-of-a-kind bookmark. Everyone ends up with a craft they can take home and use.

Another idea—use photos. You can print out small pictures of your family, pets, or friends and stick them inside the bookmark before sealing with contact paper. It makes the craft extra special and personal.

And don’t worry if it’s not perfect. That’s the fun of crafting. Each bookmark is unique and shows off your child’s personality.

These DIY bookmarks encourage kids to read, too. After we finished ours, my kids ran to grab their books just so they could use their new bookmarks. That’s a win in my book.

DIY Bookmark Instructions

Step 1: Tear Your Tissue Paper

Tear your tissue paper into small squares or any shape you desire. Don’t worry about making them perfectly symmetrical – imperfections often add character and charm to your creations.

Or you could use scissors to cut the tissue paper into small squares.

We used three different shades of blue to make our bookmarks.

Step 2: Cut and Fold Your Contact Paper

Cut the contact paper into a long rectangle. Fold the rectangle shaped contact paper in half and crease it in half (make sure you can tell where your fold is). Unfold contact paper rectangle.

Step 3: Remove Back of Contact Paper and Apply Tissue Paper.

Next, peel the backing off of the rectangle shaped contact paper. Make sure the sticky side is up.

Carefully, place your small pieces of tissue paper on the contact paper. Only cover 1/2 of the rectangle (this is where your crease in the contact paper is helpful).

Step 4: Seal Your Bookmark

Once your tissue paper is in place, carefully fold over the contact paper rectangle, aligning the edges. Press down firmly to seal the layers together, removing any air bubbles as you go.

You may need to cut the edges of the bookmark, if the contact paper didn’t align evenly.

Step 6: Add A Ribbon

Next, use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of your bookmark. Then, thread a ribbon, yarn, or string through it for a decorative touch. You can also add a bead or charm to the ribbon for a decorative touch. Tie the ribbon into a loop.

We used twine for our bookmarks and charms. We decided to make beach themed bookmarks, so we used beach inspired charms.
