DIY Bookmark Instructions
Step 1: Choose Your Tissue Paper
Select tissue paper in colors and patterns that speak to you. Think about the themes of the books you love or the colors that inspire your imagination. You can mix and match different colors or use a single color for a sleek and minimalist look. Remember, the choice is entirely up to you.
We used three different shades of blue to make our bookmarks.
Step 2: Tear Your Tissue Paper
Next, tear your tissue paper into small pieces or any shape you desire. Don’t worry about making them perfectly symmetrical – imperfections often add character and charm to your creations.
Or you could use scissors to cut the tissue paper into small squares.
Step 3: Cut and Fold Your Contact Paper
Cut the contact paper into a long rectangle. Fold the rectangle shaped contact paper in half and crease it in half (make sure you can tell where your fold is). Unfold contact paper rectangle.
Step 4: Remove Back of Contact Paper and Apply Tissue Paper.
Next, peel the backing off of the rectangle shaped contact paper. Make sure the sticky side is up.
Carefully, place your small pieces of tissue paper on the contact paper. Only cover 1/2 of the rectangle (this is where your crease in the contact paper is helpful).
Step 5: Seal Your Bookmark
Once your tissue paper is in place, carefully fold over the contact paper rectangle, aligning the edges. Press down firmly to seal the layers together, removing any air bubbles as you go.
You may need to cut the edges of the bookmark, if the contact paper didn’t align evenly.
Step 6: Add A Ribbon and Charm
Next, use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of your bookmark. Then, thread a ribbon, yarn, or string through it for a decorative touch. You can also add a bead or charm to the ribbon for a decorative touch. Tie the ribbon into a loop.
We used twine for our bookmarks and charms. We decided to make beach themed bookmarks, so we used beach inspired charms.
Step 7: Enjoy Your Homemade Bookmarks
Once your bookmarks are sealed and any additional decorations are added, they are ready to use! Slide them into the pages of your favorite book and never lose your spot again. Feel free to make multiple bookmarks and gift them to your book-loving friends.
I hope you enjoyed making these DIY bookmarks with your kids. Happy reading and happy crafting!
